Hi Jon! This article is more about something I have put together using the Kiva API, than on how to use it. It sounds like you may be looking for http://build.kiva.org/docs/conventions, which describes the Kiva API for accessing the loan data they provide.

The colors are a representation of the network of people involved with the loans. In this case, the recipients of the loan and the local partners Kiva works with to distribute and manage the loans. If recipient "R" gets a loan through partner "P," I draw a line between them. Some of the recipients have loans through multiple partners, so that's why you see clusters develop.

Good luck on your project!

Hi Erich. I came to this Kiva site becuase i was told i could do some API programming. I was looking for something to do for a HUGE school project. Could you please tell me how i can get stuck into programming and tell me some of the things i can do. Also, i would like to no how all those colours up there ^ are related to helping people with their loans... Sorry, im 15 and just started getting into computers. It all sounds pretty complicated to me :(

@Skylar Thanks! The colors are a rough representation of centrality in the cluster -- lighter = more central. The exception is blue, which indicates all edges have the same value.

This map shows the connection between the partners (at the center) and recipients.

What I'd really like to map is individuals within the recipient groups and the donors rather than partners. Is there a way to get at that info? I think it could be a cool way to show your donors how they fit into the Kiva universe.

Very cool. Erich, can you explain more about the significance of locations or colors? Also, are loans at the center of each cluster still?
